Permanent Wave is a feminist group that knows women are more than groupies and merch girls. We value art from female, trans, and LGBTQ people that challenges the norm. We believe that women should see other women as collaborators and inspirations, not rivals. We want to rip the band-aid off the halted conversations and change the way women are treated.

SOUND WAVE: Feminist music, art, and performance — to be played at maximum volume.

dairy and rape; or, why i adopted a vegan lifestyle. [31 May 2010|11:51am]
"For us to maintain our way of living, we must tell lies to each other and especially to ourselves. The lies are necessary because, without them, many deplorable acts would become impossibilities." (Derrick Jensen, "The Culture of Make-Believe")

when i was a child, i was fascinated by "where things came from." when drinking a glass of milk, or enjoying slices of gouda from my oma, i often wondered about the source, but didn't care enough to ask. eventually i did, and the answer i received was "it's from cows." i accepted this answer.

now, take a look at these photos:

what are these images that the dairy industry is selling us? happy cows, pastoral settings. complacent and comfortable animals roaming around, full of milk just for us to consume. but how do they produce all this milk for us? they must just produce more than they need, right? aren't we helping cows by milking them?

none of these assertions are true, yet many of us believe them. i did. i did for years, and i never questioned the potential fact that they were lies. a cow is a mammal, much like a human. and mammals produce milk (lactate) only when they have given birth to young. in the case of humans, this would be a child. for a cow; it's when she bears a calf. we are a wary species and we dislike comparisons likening us to nonhuman animals, but mammalian physiology is inescapable. just like us, cows will not produce milk unless they have borne offspring.

so how do they bear these offspring? i often wondered about where children came from as a child, particularly wondering where i'd come from. i had this vague idea that maybe at the altar, my parents had made some agreement with some omnipotent force that a child would be begotten, in the number and sex of their choosing. now i know quite a bit better. the introduction of male genetic material (sperm) to an ovum, or an egg, creates a new life. in humans and in cows, this is often achieved through mating (call it what you want--humans mate just as any other mammal mates) which allows for the transfer of sperm from the male to the female. in cows and humans, this is an intimate yet thoroughly "basic" act, allowing the mating pair to pursue and fulfill their biological interests.

except on a dairy farm, things are a little bit different. this is a dairy cow's sexual partner:

often referred to as a "rape rack," the bovine insemination gun is filled with thawed semen collected from a bull months or years earlier. then, the human tasked with delivering the semen to the cow will insert his forearm into her anus to guide the gun into her vagina and through her cervix, where the semen will be discharged from the gun. no anesthetics are used.

the cow will first be forcibly inseminated through this incredibly invasive procedure at around 15 months of age. after seven months of pregnancy, she will bear a calf, which will be taken away from her within 24 hours. she produces milk only at this time, after bearing a calf, because the milk is intended to nourish that calf.

sometimes, to produce better dairy cows, a cow with superior genetics have the "rape rack" used on her. then, after the embryos have formed in her womb, she will be fed hormones and will have her uterus "flushed." these embryos will be implanted in surrogate cows for development. after birth, the calves will be taken, and the milking cycle will begin. the cow from whom the embryos were taken will be subjected to the "rape rack" repeatedly, without carrying any pregnancies to term, in order to consistently produce cows that better fulfill the demands we have created.

cows, like humans, and most other mammals, have a strong bond with their young, and the loss of a calf is no less traumatic and terrifying for the cow-mother than it would be for a human-mother to lose her own child hours after birth. after the calf is taken away, the cow will be penned inside an extremely small cell with automatic milking equipment attached to her udders, sucking away at the nourishment her body has produced to raise her stolen young. cows have been noted bellowing mournfully for their loss, sometimes even for days after the deed has been done.

but i'm not focusing on the theft of young from cows, horrible as it is. what i want to focus on, specifically, is the act of artificial insemination without any regard for sexual autonomy. i am not crossing the line by drawing the parallel between this act and rape. the "rape rack" is an instrument of sexual assault. every farmer who has utilized this instrument is perpetuating systematic sexual assault.

i have been victimized, sexually. i have been raped and sexually assaulted. i have had my sexuality used against me, and i firmly believe that it is because we live in a culture where the denial of sexual autonomy is the norm. in my situations of sexual assault, it was very clear to me that what was happening to me was based in feelings of entitlement from the male party--this was just what was supposed to happen now. likewise, my culture feels entitled to consume dairy, continually blind and ignorant of its source, and the rape that must occur for us to receive that fleeting pleasure.

after coping with these situations in the past year, it has become extremely clear to me that i cannot continue to consume dairy products while working to create a world without rape and sexual assault.

i've been wondering...if cows could speak, would we accept that "no means no"?

2 poems [25 Jan 2010|05:02pm]
"territories"

if i could go out exploring
the soft
curves of your landscape
wiry hairs concentrating
converging, a flock
and dissipating across your
lithe legs
it would seem you are
an amalgamation
because there are forests
alive on your
legs
but a constellation, small freckles
Orion bends on your knee.

"whether"
when you spoke that night
i
felt it in my bones
and two days later the storm
came through
it tore at the trees
filled the holes
screaming wind and thunderous wash
echoing in cavernous puils
as you closed your mouth and
wetly opened your eyes.

[30 Dec 2008|11:35am]
[ mood | sleepy ]

I am posting from about a mile above the Midwest.

Inflight wireless is the shit.

Landing in California in about 3.5 hours. Bitchin'.

I hate changing timezones. I refuse to believe that it's really 11:30. I don't think it is. I think that's a lie and we may have gone over the border to 10:30. Or 9:30, even. I'm going to stop thinking about this, now.
